The Daviess County Community Foundation awarded more than $227,000 to 19 local nonprofits through its Community Good Grants Program. These grants support projects that strengthen the Daviess community and improve the quality of life for local residents.

2025 Community Good Grant Recipients

$5,000 to American Red Cross Southwest Indiana Chapter for financial assistance to disaster survivors in Daviess County by supporting recovery needs such as replacing medications, clothing, baby diapers, temporary housing, and more
$4,200 to Bread of Life Ministry Inc. for the cost of two semi loads of donated food product that will be distributed to partnering food pantries in Daviess County
$13,100 to Children & Family Services, Corp for Hope’s Voice clients with the emergency rent and utility assistance, and Grasshopper Group staff with the cost of Attachment Based Expressive Arts training
$5,422 to Christ United Methodist Church for new handbell tables, new foam pads, travel bags, new table covers, mallets, and a mallet bag
$4,200 to Daviess County Partnership Inc. for the cost of adding ten additional entities to Charity Tracker
$53,618 to Daviess County Peer Recovery Services Inc. for the local match requirement for Daviess County IRACS program which will directly support peer recovery specialists, reentry planning, evidence-based group programming, 30 days of post-release peer support, and transportation needs of participants
$5,000 to Daviess-Martin Joint County Parks and Recreation Department for the purchase of a permanent, commercial grade shade structure, site preparation, and professional installation to meet safety and ADA accessibility standards at West Boggs Park
$200 to Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra for the cost of admission for Daviess County students attending the concerts
$20,000 to First Choice Solutions for the purchase of essential material supplies to help families meet critical needs for their babies, the Bright Course educational curriculum for English and Spanish speaking clients, and medical supplies to continue offering free testing, treatments and prenatal vitamins at no cost to clients
$5,000 to Friends for Animals, Inc. for a $50 voucher to help pet owners with the cost to spay or neuter their pets
$6,000 to Junior Achievement of Southwestern Indiana for the cost program administration, curriculum materials, volunteer training and recruitment, insurance, and program evaluation
$25,000 to Odon Lions Club Foundation for the cost of the walking bridge, gazebo, shelter house, and walking path project
$5,000 to Odon-Winkelpleck Public Library for books for the mobile library
$10,000 to Pet Friendly Services of Indiana for expanding Pet Friendly Services of Indiana’s Spay-Neuter Assistance Program (SNAP) for income-qualified dog owners in Daviess County to spay or neuter their dogs
$24,130 to RSVP of Daviess County for a portion of personnel costs and the full expected budget for vehicle insurance and gasoline for the year
$8,250 to Senior and Family Services, Inc. for the purchase of the Oliver Speadseal system which includes new delivery bags, trays and sealing film for the next two years, and the cost to deliver the sealing machine for the Meals on Wheels program
$3,000 to Tri-State Food Bank for the purchase of fresh produce, dairy, proteins, and shelf-stable items to ensure balanced, nutritious food boxes for each distribution
$249 to Washington Community Schools for a NexPlayground for Washington Intermediate School
$30,000 to Youth First, Inc. for the Youth First School-Based Social Work Program that provides free access to expert mental health support to students in eight K-12 Daviess County school buildings

Caitlyn Kribs of Barr-Reeve High School Named 2026 Lilly Endowment Community Scholar for Daviess County

Daviess County Community Foundation is pleased to announce the recipient of the 2026 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship for Daviess County: Caitlyn Kribs, Barr-Reeve High School. Lilly Endowment Community Scholars are recognized for their community involvement, academic achievement, character, and leadership.

"The Daviess County Community Foundation was extremely impressed with this year’s Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship applicants. Their academic achievements, commitment to community service, and inspiring future goals demonstrate a bright potential to positively impact Daviess County—both now and in the years ahead," said Laura Hazelman, Regional Director of Community Engagement and Impact.

Each Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship provides full tuition, required fees, and up to $900 per year for required books and equipment for four years of full-time undergraduate study leading to a baccalaureate degree at any eligible Indiana public or private nonprofit college or university.

Scholars also join the Lilly Scholars Network (LSN), which connects them with resources and opportunities to lead on campus and in their communities. Both the scholarship program and LSN are supported by grants from Lilly Endowment to Independent Colleges of Indiana (ICI).

"I am extremely honored and grateful to receive this life-changing opportunity, especially with so many impressive finalists. I would like to thank the Community Foundation, my school, and my incredible support system for this award. With the aid of this [Lilly Endowment Community] Scholarship, I plan to attend an Indiana institution where I can earn a degree in finance that will prepare me to serve my future community," said Caitlyn Kribs, Lilly Endowment Community Scholar.

In nominating Daviess County’s Lilly Endowment Community Scholar, the committee considered academic performance, community service, volunteer activities, personal statement of goals and essay, school activities, sports, and work experience. Those advancing to phase two were scored on an in-person interview and impromptu essay, designed to demonstrate the student’s verbal communication skills and overall civic pride and interest in the quality of their community. After narrowing the field of applicants, nominees were submitted to Independent Colleges of Indiana (ICI), the statewide administrator of the program, for final selection.

Since its inception in 1997-1998, Lilly Endowment has supported this program with tuition grants totaling more than $505 million, benefiting over 5,400 Indiana students. The program’s primary purposes are:

To raise the level of educational attainment in Indiana.
To increase awareness of the beneficial roles Indiana community foundations play.
To encourage and support Lilly Scholars’ engagement with Indiana leaders to improve quality of life statewide.

These scholarships, made possible by generous local donors, provide financial support for students pursuing college, university, technical programs, or other post-secondary education paths.

The Daviess County Community Foundation is now accepting applications for its 2025 Community Good Grants Program. Nonprofit organizations serving Daviess County are invited to apply now through Tuesday, September 9, 2025.

Community Good Grants are awarded to charitable partners addressing a wide range of local needs. Funding is available to support programs and projects that make a meaningful impact in Daviess County communities.

The 2026 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Application is Now Open in Daviess County

The 2026 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship application is now available in Daviess County through the Daviess County Community Foundation, an affiliate of the Community Foundation Alliance. The Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program (LECSP) will provide 147 scholarships statewide and one scholarship in Daviess County.

LECSP scholarships may be used for otherwise unreimbursed full tuition, required fees, and a special allocation of up to $900 per year. The special allocation may cover the costs for required books and required equipment for four years of undergraduate study on a full-time basis, leading to a baccalaureate degree at any eligible Indiana public or private nonprofit college or university.

The program, administered statewide by Independent Colleges of Indiana (ICI) and locally in Daviess County through the Daviess County Community Foundation, an affiliate of the Community Foundation Alliance, is open to all Indiana residents who:

graduate from an accredited Indiana high school by 2026 and receive their diploma no later than June 30, 2026;
intend to pursue a full-time baccalaureate course of study at an eligible college or university in Indiana; and
meet the criteria specific to Daviess County Community Foundation. Visit daviesscountycf.org/lilly-endowment-community-scholarship-program for complete information regarding the Daviess County application criteria.

Students can learn more about the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship in Daviess County and apply for this scholarship by visiting the Daviess County Community Foundation website. Applications must be completed and submitted by August 25, 2025, to be considered.

Applications will be evaluated on, but not limited to, the following criteria: academic performance, community service, volunteer activities, personal statement of goals, essay, school activities, sports, and work experience. Three finalists will be nominated by the Daviess County Community Foundation, and their names will be submitted to ICI for final selection of the recipients. Scholarship recipients will be notified in December.

28 Students Awarded More Than $100,000 in Scholarships from the Daviess County Community Foundation

The Daviess County Community Foundation distributed more than $100,000 to 28 local Daviess County students from its Community Scholarship Program. These scholarships are funded by generous donors who have established a scholarship fund with the Daviess County Community Foundation.

This year’s scholarship luncheon to celebrate and recognize these exceptional students was held at the Washington Community Building, with fund founders, recipients, and parents attending. In addition to announcing the recipients, the Regional Director of Community Engagement & Impact, Laura Hazelman reflected on how important the community is in stewarding education in Daviess County.

“We are deeply grateful to the generous fund founders and donors who make these scholarship awards possible through the Daviess County Community Foundation. Their investment in the education of our youth is truly life-changing for each recipient. Selecting scholarship recipients is a thoughtful and rigorous process, carried out by a dedicated committee of Foundation Advisory Board members and community volunteers. We appreciate their commitment and care. It’s never an easy decision—Daviess County is home to many outstanding students,” said Hazelman.

Each year, the Daviess County Community Foundation announces the recipient of the 2025 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship for Daviess County, a full tuition, required fees, and a special allocation of up to $900 per year for required books and required equipment for four years scholarship. Alongside, two alternates are designated, ensuring readiness in case the initially selected scholar cannot accept the award due to special circumstances.

This year, after the initially named recipient, Brynna Knepp, graciously declined the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship, the scholarship was offered to the First Alternate, Jack Murrie, North Daviess High School.

Brynna Knepp, the initial recipient, declined the scholarship after accepting the University of Southern Indiana’s Presidential Scholarship.

“This scholarship [Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship] is an enormous opportunity to stay in Indiana and has better prepared me to help my community in the future,” said Jack Murrie, 2025 Lilly Endowment Community Scholar.

The scholarship is for full-time undergraduate students leading to a baccalaureate degree at any eligible Indiana public or private nonprofit college or university. Lilly Endowment Community Scholars may also participate in the Lilly Scholars Network (LSN), which connects both current scholars and alumni with resources and opportunities to be active leaders on their campuses and in their communities. Both the scholarship program and LSN are supported by grants from Lilly Endowment to Independent Colleges of Indiana (ICI) and Indiana Humanities.

Lilly Endowment created the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program for the 1997-98 school year. Since then, grant funding in excess of $490 million has supported more than 5,300 Indiana students who have received scholarships through the program.

2024 Community Scholarship Applications Open

Many of our donors have chosen to honor their loved ones, communities, high schools, colleges, and professions by establishing scholarship funds through their local Community Foundations in Daviess, Gibson, Knox, Perry, Pike, Posey, Spencer, Vanderburgh, and Warrick Counties. These funds support the annual Community Scholarship programs, providing valuable opportunities for students in Southwest Indiana. Thanks to their contributions, applications are being accepted now, with a deadline of Monday, January 20, 2025, at 11:59 p.m.

"We are excited to once again provide scholarship opportunities to students in our Southwest Indiana region,” says Melinda Waldroup, Chief Program Officer at the Community Foundation Alliance. “By offering these scholarships, we are not only investing in individual students but also in the future of our communities. We encourage all eligible students to apply and take a step towards achieving their educational and career goals."

Students may apply for one or more scholarships if they meet the eligibility requirements and selection criteria established by donors. Details about each scholarship and the application are posted on the website at communityfoundationalliance.org/scholarships .

Each scholarship is unique and supports students with a variety of backgrounds, educational goals, and economic statuses. Awards are made without regard to race, creed, color, sex, religion, or national origin and are based on a competitive process that may consider academic achievement, extracurricular activities, personal aspirations, educational goals, and financial need.

$75,000 Impact Grant Awarded to Washington Free Methodist Church

(Washington, Indiana) A $75,000 Impact Grant was awarded to Washington Free Methodist Church, by the Daviess County Community Foundation, an affiliate of the Community Foundation Alliance. This grant will support capital improvements for the Foundations Childcare Ministry, including, kitchen remodel and the addition of essential facilities, including an onsite laundry, an extra sink, playground equipment, and a fence. The grant will also provide funding for the Brightwheel Childcare Management System, continuing education to meet Paths to Quality requirements, Ages to Stages developmental screening tool, toys and curricula to enhance child development, and lockers for staff and students.

The projects funded by the Impact Grant will allow the Church’s Childcare Ministry to expand the age group they care for to 0-5 years old and provide healthy, cooked meals for children participating in the program. With their expanded program and facility improvements, Washington Free Methodist Church will offer an additional option for local, quality childcare, giving Daviess County parents peace of mind as they seek to reenter the workforce or seek employment for the first time.

The Impact Grant Program is intended to fund projects or programs that will make a substantial difference in the social, cultural, economic, and/or recreational aspects of community life in Daviess County. Projects or programs should address the root causes of one or more of the county's greatest challenges, offering innovative or transformational solutions, and leading to lasting community change. In 2019, during a community forum held in Washington, the need to increase economic opportunities in Daviess County was identified as a priority issue. Supporting accessible, affordable, and quality childcare programs aligns with this priority issue by allowing working families to continue or reenter the workforce, improve employee productivity and attendance, and provide employment opportunities to childcare workers.

The Impact Grant was made possible by generous donors to the Community Good funds held with the Daviess County Community Foundation. Community Good funds are unrestricted, which allows the Foundation to award discretionary resources to help meet immediate local needs and invest in emerging community opportunities, for impactful grantmaking throughout Daviess County.

Daviess County Community Foundation Now Accepting Applications For The 2025 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program

The 2025 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship application is now available in Daviess County through the Daviess County Community Foundation. The Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program (LECSP) will provide 147 scholarships statewide and one scholarship in Daviess County. LECSP scholarships may be used for otherwise unreimbursed full tuition, required fees, and a special allocation of up to $900 per year. The special allocation may cover the costs for required books and required equipment for four years of undergraduate study on a full-time basis leading to a baccalaureate degree at any eligible Indiana public or private nonprofit college or university.

The program, administered statewide by Independent Colleges of Indiana (ICI) and locally in Daviess County through the Daviess County Community Foundation, is open to all Indiana residents who:

graduate from an accredited Indiana high school by 2025 and receive their diploma no later than June 30, 2025;
intend to pursue a full-time baccalaureate course of study at an eligible college or university in Indiana; and

Applications will be evaluated on, but not limited to, the following criteria: Academic Performance, Community Service and Volunteer Activities, and an Essay. Three finalists will be nominated by the Daviess County Community Foundation, and their names will be submitted to ICI for final selection of the recipients. Scholarship recipients will be notified in December.

Lilly Endowment created LECSP for the 1997-98 school year and has supported the program every year since with tuition grants totaling more than $490 million. More than 5,300 Indiana students have received Lilly Endowment Community Scholarships since the program’s inception.

Daviess County Community Foundation Now Accepting Applications For Community Good Grants

The Daviess County Community Foundation is now accepting online applications for its Community Good Grants Program. The deadline to submit applications is Noon on Wednesday, August 21, 2024.

The Foundation awards Community Good grants to charitable partners located in or directly serving Daviess County. Funding opportunities are available to support a broad range of local needs. Grants are typically given as one-time support of a project but may be considered for additional support or for expansions or outgrowths of an initial project.

Charitable organizations can view details related to funding requirements and access the grant application via the Foundation’s website at daviesscountycf.org/grants . All organizations submitting grant proposals will be notified of the outcome via email on or before November 15, 2024.

Agencies and projects not eligible for funding include religious organizations proposing activities that support a religious purpose, political parties or campaigns, endowment creation or debt reduction, capital campaigns, annual appeals or membership contributions, and travel requests for groups or individuals such as bands, sports teams, or school classes.

Daviess County Community Foundation Awards Over $98,000 In Scholarships

The Daviess County Community Foundation announces the distribution of community scholarships totaling $98,700. This year, funds established by generous donors provided scholarships to 31 area students. The scholarship luncheon for fund founders, recipients, and parents was held Wednesday, April 24, 2024, at the Washington Community Building.

In addition to announcing the recipients, the Regional Director of Community Engagement & Impact, Laura Hazelman states, “The Daviess County Community Foundation is thankful to our generous fund founders and donors who make these scholarship awards possible. Their investment in the education of our young people has impacted each of these students. The process of choosing who will be awarded scholarships is undertaken with dedication and discipline by a committee of Daviess County Community Foundation Advisory Board and community volunteers. We are grateful for their hard work and dedication. The process is never easy because our Daviess County students are exceptional.”

The scholarships awarded:

Derek Ray Arvin Memorial Scholarship is an annual scholarship established by the family of Derek Ray Arvin, class of 2014, to benefit a Washington High School graduating senior. Along with several other factors, the selection is based on financial need, the applicant’s level of athletic involvement, and their participation in a faith community. This year’s award is $2,500 and the recipient is Liberty Holtsclaw.

Ronald Todd Beasley Memorial Scholarship is an annual scholarship established in memory of Ronald Todd Beasley by his parents, Ronald Lee and Diane Beasley; his brother, Dr. Harley Scott Beasley; and friends. Applicants must be graduating seniors of North Daviess High School who demonstrate qualities associated with good moral character and citizenship. This year’s $2,500 award recipient is Brynlee Perkins.

Ronald Frette and Ann Frette 4-H Scholarship is an annual scholarship created by the Daviess County 4-H Club Association in honor of long-time supporters, Ronald and Ann Frette. Daviess County residents who are graduates of a Daviess County high school and pursuing post-secondary undergraduate studies or training may apply. Applicants must have participated in a Daviess County 4-H program for at least five years, completed at least two 4-H projects during each of those years, and maintained a minimum 2.5 cumulative grade point average during high school. Applicants must also demonstrate personal interest in and a positive attitude toward continuing their education and demonstrate good moral character. This year’s recipient is Jordan Remsburg, Purdue University, and Reid Morris, Rose Hulman Institute of Technology. They will each be awarded $3,000.

Steven L. Gines College Scholarship is an annual scholarship established by friends of Steven L. Gines in his memory. It is open to graduating seniors of Washington High School who have completed college preparatory classes in high school and have been involved in the arts. This year’s $600 award recipient is Eliana Sellers.

GPC Washington Employees Scholarship is an annual scholarship created by the employees of Kent-Grain Processing Corporation in Washington to encourage the dependants of employees to further their education, to recognize the academic achievement of those graduating from high school and continuing their education, and to motivate recipients to achieve maximum scholastic and vocational potential. This year there are three recipients each receiving $3,000: Ellie Reed, University of Southern Indiana; Trey Reed, Oakland City University; and Hayleigh Cummins, Valparaiso University.

David K. Lynch Memorial Scholarship is an annual scholarship established by Cathleen M. (Lynch) Kendall in memory of her husband. Graduating seniors of any Daviess County high school who attended Lena Dunn Elementary School may apply. This year’s $700 award recipient is Rosicela Serrano, Washington Catholic High School.

McCall Family Teachers Scholarship is a scholarship established by the John and Anna McCall Trust Fund to provide scholarships to graduates of North Daviess High School who are pursuing a career in teaching with an emphasis in fine arts or elementary education. This year the $700 scholarship was awarded to Erica Kemp.

McKinley Vance Agri-Business Scholarship is an annual scholarship established by Lucile Vance in memory of her husband. Graduating seniors of Daviess County high schools with a scholastic rank in the upper third of their class may apply. Applicants must have participated in 4-H for at least four years and be pursuing a degree in the field of agriculture. This year the $2,000 scholarship was awarded to Jordan Remsburg, Purdue University.

North Daviess Scholarship is an annual scholarship established by the North Daviess Academic Opportunity Alliance (formerly known as North Daviess Dollars for Scholars Program) to help North Daviess students pursue advanced education. Applicants must be graduating seniors of North Daviess High School planning to pursue a degree at any accredited 2- or 4-year educational institution or trade school. This year there are four recipients each receiving $1,000: Brynlee Perkins, Travis Raber, Maxwell Toy, and Lily Graber.

German American Bancorp Scholarship is an annual scholarship established by the former Peoples National Bank of Washington. It is open to seniors from any Daviess County high school with a 3.0 cumulative grade point average planning to major in a business-related course of study. Selection is based on academics and leadership skills. The $2,000 award recipient is Elle Knepp, Barr-Reeve High School.

Jo Ann Shawhan Memorial Scholarship is an annual scholarship established by John Shawhan in memory of his wife Jo Ann to benefit Daviess County students pursuing a nursing degree at Vincennes University. This year’s recipients are Madison Brunson, Barr-Reeve $1,800; Lily Graber, North Daviess $1,500; Brynlee Perkins, North Daviess $1,500; and Carter Jessie, North Daviess $1,200.

Dwight Risley Scholarship is an annual scholarship established by Martha Risley Reiners in memory of her husband. The fund typically awards multiple graduating seniors of any Daviess County high school for tuition, books, and required fees of post-secondary education. Applicants must demonstrate good scholastic standing and financial need. This year there are nine recipients: Brynlee Perkins, North Daviess $6,000; Elle Knepp, Barr-Reeve $5,250; Liberty Holtsclaw, Washington High School $5,250; Mariah Brunson, Barr-Reeve $3,750; Brooklyn Wagler, North Daviess $3,750; Alli Robinson, Barr-Reeve $2,500; Akaysha Stoll, Barr-Reeve $2,500; Kennedy Sinnott, Barr-Reeve $2,000; and Adeline Jarrett, Barr-Reeve $2,000.

Marilyn L. Wallace Scholarship is an annual scholarship established in memory of Marilyn Wallace by her husband Lewis and her daughter Marcia McConnell. Graduating North Daviess High School seniors who plan to pursue post-secondary education in health or health-related fields are eligible for this award. This year’s $700 recipient is Brooklyn Wagler.

Charles and Maxine Williams Scholarship is an annual scholarship established by the Estate of Maxine Williams in memory of Charles and Maxine to benefit North Daviess High School graduating seniors. Applicants must be planning to pursue a degree at an accredited 2- or 4-year educational institution or trade school. This year’s recipients are Brynlee Perkins, $1,800; Travis Raber, $1,200; Lily Graber, $1,200; Luke Graber, $900; and Maxwell Toy, $900.

Fraternal Order of Police Washington Lodge 101 Scholarship is an annual scholarship created by Lodge 101 of the Washington Indiana Fraternal Order of Police. The recipient must be planning to pursue a degree in Law enforcement or a related field. This year’s award is $2,000 and the recipient is Owen McCracken, Barr-Reeve High School.

Lawrell Ray Hilgeman Memorial Scholarship is an annual scholarship created by Veale Creek Players in memory of Lawrell Ray Hilgeman. Applicants must have been involved in productions featured at the Veale Creek Theatre in Washington. This year’s recipients are Madelyn Jones, Washington High School $1,250; and Azeria Ackerman, Seekers of Truth $750.

Sheldon Matthew Smith Memorial Scholarship is an annual scholarship created by Gregory A. and Natalie J. Smith in memory of their son, Sheldon (1993-2006). Graduating seniors from Washington High School or Washington Catholic High School planning a degree in writing, computer graphics, computer game design, computer art design, computer animation, computer programming, and/or web design are eligible to apply. This year’s award is $1,000, and the recipient is Cassie Dillon, Washington High School.

William and Mary Summers Memorial Scholarship is an annual scholarship established by Phillip M. Summers and William E. Summers in memory of their parents. Graduating seniors from Washington High School planning full-time enrollment at Vincennes University majoring in Business or Education are eligible. This year’s $1,000 recipient is Cassie Dillon.

Ray L. Angerer Memorial Scholarship is an annual scholarship created by Westminster Presbyterian Church in memory of Ray L. Angerer. Applicants must be communicant members of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Washington, IN. This year’s recipient, Shelby Norris, will be awarded $2,000.

Daviess County Community Foundation Scholarship

This year, 22 students applied for the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship, and as in years past, the Daviess County Community Foundation awards scholarships to students who are the first and second alternates for the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship and other finalists. The scholarships are made possible by donors to the Friends of Daviess County endowment fund. The total amount awarded this year is $15,000. The recipients are First Alternate, Mariah Brunson, Barr-Reeve High School $5,000; Second Alternate, Adeline Jarrett, Barr-Reeve High School $3,000. The following finalists will each receive $1,000: Audrey Jerger, Washington Catholic; Brooklyn Wagler, North Daviess; Elijah Parsons, Washington; Brynlee Perkins, North Daviess; Kennedy Sinnott, Barr-Reeve; Shakira Wagler, Barr-Reeve; and Carter Jessie, North Daviess.

Katie Raber of Barr-Reeve High School is the 2024 Daviess County Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship recipient. She will receive a full-tuition scholarship to the Indiana college of her choice and a $900 yearly stipend for required books and equipment. The Daviess County Community Foundation accepted applications and a volunteer selection committee made up of community leaders completed the review process for this award with final selections being made by Independent Colleges of Indiana.

Daviess County Community Foundation Awards Daviess Gives Grant

Friends for Kids of Daviess County recently received a $1,000 grant from the Daviess County Community Foundation through the Daviess Gives Grant Program.

The Daviess Gives Grant Program allows Daviess County Community Foundation advisory board members to recommend $1,000 grants to local nonprofit organizations. The Foundation’s most recent grant recommendation was made by Amy Matteson for general support of Friends for Kids of Daviess County.

Daviess County Community Foundation Announces The 2024 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program Recipient

The Daviess County Community Foundation is pleased to announce the recipient of the 2024 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship for Daviess County – Katie Elizabeth Raber of Barr-Reeve High School. Lilly Endowment Community Scholars are known for their community involvement, academic achievement, character, and leadership.

“Not only is Katie at the top of her class academically, but her dedication to her school and community was also apparent in her application and interview. The nominating committee was honored to have the opportunity to meet Katie and recommend her for this life-changing scholarship opportunity,” said Laura Hazelman, Regional Director of Community Engagement and Impact for the Daviess County Community Foundation.

Katie is the daughter of Christopher and Rose Raber. Following graduation, she plans to pursue a major in Psychology and eventually become a Psychologist. Katie plans to attend either Taylor University or Indiana Wesleyan. In addition to excelling academically, she is active in a variety of school activities including Daviess County CEO, Indiana Senior Beta Club, SADD, Spell Bowl, FCA and FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America). Katie is also active in Track and Field and Cross Country, earning six varsity letters. She has been named Team Captain for Cross Country. Katie is very active in her church youth group, teaching Vacation Bible School, counselor at Bible Memory Ministries and has attended Mission trips to Guatemala, Mexico and Columbus, Ohio.

Each Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship provides for full tuition, required fees and a special allocation of up to $900 per year for required books and required equipment for four years. The scholarship is for full-time undergraduate students leading to a baccalaureate degree at any eligible Indiana public or private nonprofit college or university. Lilly Endowment Community Scholars may also participate in the Lilly Scholars Network (LSN), which connects both current scholars and alumni with resources and opportunities to be active leaders on their campuses and in their communities. Both the scholarship program and LSN are supported by grants from Lilly Endowment to Independent Colleges of Indiana (ICI) and Indiana Humanities.

In determining Daviess County’s Lilly Endowment Community Scholar nominee, consideration was given to academic performance; community service and volunteer activities; personal statement of goals and essay; school activities, sports, and work experience; those advancing to phase two were scored on an impromptu essay; civic pride and interest; and an in-person interview by the LECSP Nominating Committee. After the field of applicants was narrowed down, nominees were submitted to ICI, the statewide administrator of the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program, which approves the final selection of scholarship recipients.

“The Community Foundation was thoroughly impressed with the quality of applicants and their level of involvement, Daviess County has many outstanding young adults full of talent and drive,” said Hazelman. Scholarship award alternates were also announced, Mariah Brunson of Barr-Reeve High School was named the first alternate, and Adeline Jarrett of Barr-Reeve High School was named the second alternate.

Lilly Endowment created the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program for the 1998-99 school year and has supported the program every year since with grants totaling in excess of $505 million. More than 5,200 Indiana students have received the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship since the program’s inception.

Daviess County Community Foundation Awards Over $200,000 In Community Good Grants To Local Nonprofits

The Daviess County Community Foundation distributed $206,092 in grants to fourteen local nonprofit organizations through the 2024 Community Good Grants Program.

Grants awarded are:

· $9,333 to Odon Volunteer Fire Department to purchase stabilization struts and vehicle cribbing to be placed on the Rescue Truck;

· $4,200 to Bread of Life Ministry Inc. to assist with the cost of bringing two semi-loads of donated food products to Daviess County to be distributed among the food pantries and partner agencies;

· $2,400 to Chemo Buddies to provide first-day chemo comfort kit bags (chapstick, hand sanitizer, port pillow, neck rest, handmade warm blanket, tissues, game books, candy, chocolate, journal, pen, etc.), wigs, hats and accessories, and periodic transportation for chemo patients;

· $25,000 to Youth First, Inc. to support the Youth First School-Based Social Work Program that provides free access to expert mental health support to students in seven K-12 Daviess County schools;

· $5,000 to Washington Carnegie Public Library to support the Explore, Engage & Empower community program focusing on diverse arts and culture while fostering creativity and inclusivity;

· $30,000 to Daviess County Family YMCA to assist with the cost of the new HRU pool system, new ductwork, and repairs in the pool area;

CFA Recognizes Staff Member Savannah Linenburg Through New Grant Program

The Community Foundation Alliance would like to congratulate staff member Savannah Linenburg on her recent anniversary of employment. Linenburg selected Daviess County Historical Society to receive a $500 grant through the Generosity at Work Grant Program to recognize her work anniversary with the Alliance.

The recently introduced Generosity at Work Grant Program enables Alliance staff members to contribute to the communities they serve by recommending a $500 grant to the 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization of their preference through the Ronald L. Bauer Regional Fund on their work anniversary.

Linenburg recently celebrated her first work anniversary as the Regional Director of Development for Daviess, Knox, and Pike counties – part of the nine-county footprint of Alliance affiliates. She works closely with donors to ensure their life’s passions are carried out through lasting charitable gifts. Her work directly improves the well-being of residents in the counties she serves.

Along with her community-impacting career, Linenburg serves the community through her church and volunteering at various nonprofit organizations. Her $500 grant recommendation to the Daviess County Historical Society was for general support of the Daviess County Museum.

“I am passionate about the work of this organization,” explains Linenburg. “Historical societies hold a special place in my heart due to my great-aunt and uncle playing a leading role in my local historical society growing up. They are a familiar place, evoking fond memories of my youth.” Being a neighboring nonprofit organization situated on Main Street near the Daviess County Community Foundation, we have the opportunity to directly observe the museum's ability to captivate the attention of both residents and visitors. Linenburg went on to emphasize the generosity and warmth exhibited by the organization's volunteers.

Daviess County Community Foundation Now Accepting Applications for the 2024 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program

The 2024 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship (LECSP) application is now available in Daviess County through the Daviess County Community Foundation. The LECSP will provide 147 scholarships statewide and one scholarship in Daviess County. LECSP scholarships may be used for otherwise unreimbursed full tuition, required fees, and a special allocation of up to $900 per year. The special allocation may cover the costs for required books and required equipment for four years of undergraduate study on a full-time basis leading to a baccalaureate degree at any eligible Indiana public or private nonprofit college or university.

The program, administered statewide by Independent Colleges of Indiana (ICI) and locally in Daviess County through the Daviess County Community Foundation, is open to all Indiana residents who:

• graduate from an accredited Indiana high school by 2024 and receive their diploma no later than June 30, 2024;

• intend to pursue a full-time baccalaureate course of study at an eligible college or university in Indiana; and

• meet the criteria specific to their local Community Foundation.

Students can learn more about the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship in Daviess County and apply for this scholarship by visiting https://www.daviesscountycf.org/lilly-endowment-community-scholarship-program . Applications must be completed and submitted by Friday, August 25, 2023, at 12 noon EST to be considered.

Applications will be evaluated on, but not limited to, the following criteria: Academic Performance, Community Service and Volunteer Activities, and an Essay. One recipient and two alternates will be nominated by the Daviess County Community Foundation, and their names will be submitted to ICI for final selection of the recipients. Scholarship recipients will be notified in December.

Lilly Endowment created LECSP for the 1997-98 school year and has supported the program every year since with tuition grants totaling more than $486 million. More than 5,000 Indiana students have received Lilly Endowment Community Scholarships since the program’s inception.

The primary purposes of the LECSP are: 1) to help raise the level of educational attainment in Indiana; 2) to increase awareness of the beneficial roles Indiana community foundations can play in their communities; and 3) to encourage and support the efforts of current and past Lilly Endowment Community Scholars to engage with each other and with Indiana business, governmental, educational, nonprofit and civic leaders to improve the quality of life in Indiana generally and in local communities throughout the state.

Gray Farms Presidents Scholarship Announces Award Recipients

The Community Foundation Alliance has announced the two recipients of this year’s Gray Farms Presidents Scholarship. Beth Graber of Montgomery, Indiana, and Sophie Kloppenburg of Mt. Vernon, Indiana were both awarded $1,000 scholarships. This annual scholarship is made possible through a fund established by Gray Family heirs and friends to honor the past presidents of the Gray Family business interests. This is the first year for the scholarship with awards totaling $2,000.

Beth Graber of Montgomery, Indiana will receive a $1,000 scholarship to attend the University of Southern Indiana in the fall of 2023, where she plans to study accounting. “Growing up, I have always been the girl who loves numbers and one of the few students who enjoyed spending time in math classes. While I used to think these skills were not useful, I now see that I can use my abilities to help people, even though it is with taxes and not with their physical needs. Overall, this job filled with numbers and math will keep my heart full for the years to come.” says Graber.

Sophie Kloppenburg of Mt. Vernon, IN will receive a $1,000 scholarship to attend Columbia University in the fall of 2023, where she plans to study sustainable development and chemistry. “ By studying sustainable development with a minor in chemistry, I hope to research and work on expanding the use and accessibility of sustainable aviation fuel. This niche field will help push the transportation side of the aviation industry to carbon neutrality. The sustainable development major beautifully combines the science and sociopolitical aspects that make adjusting systems so complex. A minor in chemistry ensures I can understand and innovate the science behind these processes.” says Kloppenburg.

Daviess County Community Foundation Celebrates Its 30th Anniversary By Awarding $50,000 In Grants To Six Local Nonprofits

The Daviess County Community Foundation distributed $50,000 in grants to six local nonprofit organizations to celebrate its 30 ^th Anniversary of serving Daviess County through impactful grantmaking. These grants funded projects that aim to increase economic opportunities in Daviess County, including quality of place projects, workforce development, and/or job skills training.

During our 2019 community forum held in Washington, community leaders met to discuss and identify the county’s most prevalent needs and challenges. The need to increase economic opportunities in Daviess County was identified as a priority issue.

In the past 30 years, the Daviess County Community Foundation has been able to grow our assets to over $17 million in endowments & non-permanent funds and has granted out over $10 million dollars! What an impact we have made, are making, and will make forever.

Grants awarded are:

· $25,000 to Youth First, Inc. to assist with no-cost life skills development in seven Daviess County schools;

· $13,000 to Junior Achievement of Southwest Indiana to support programs focusing on work readiness, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy;

· $4,000 to Washington Free Methodist Church to purchase supplies for education; laptops, a printer, software, and educational books to assist Annas Multi-Service with the integration of the Haitian community into Daviess County;

· $3,650 to Washington Free Methodist Church to purchase therapeutic musical equipment for the Comforting Hearts All-Inclusive playground in Longfellow Park;

· $3,600 to Southwest Indiana Powerhouse to assist with the cost of the PowerUp Entrepreneur program; and

· $750 to Odon-Winkelpleck Public Library to purchase books and supplies for the Summer Adventure Activities.

The 30 ^th Anniversary Grants Program was made possible by the Community Good Unrestricted Funds with the Daviess County Community Foundation.

Daviess County Community Foundation Awards Over $87,000 In Scholarships

The Daviess County Community Foundation announces the distribution of community scholarships totaling $87,350. This year, funds established by generous donors, provided scholarships to 29 area students. The scholarship luncheon for fund founders and recipients was held Wednesday, April 26, 2023, at the Washington Community Building.

In addition to announcing the recipients, the Regional Director of Community Engagement & Impact, Laura Hazelman states, “The Daviess County Community Foundation is thankful to our generous fund founders and donors who make these scholarship awards possible. Their investment in the education of our young people has impacted each of these students. The process of choosing who will be awarded each of these scholarships is undertaken with dedication and discipline by a committee of Daviess County community volunteer leaders. We are grateful for their hard work and dedication in doing this. The process is never easy because our Daviess County students are exceptional.”

The scholarships awarded:

Ronald Todd Beasley Memorial Scholarship is an annual scholarship established in memory of Ronald Todd Beasley by his parents, Ronald Lee, and Diane Beasley; his brother, Dr. Harley Scott Beasley; and friends. Applicants must be graduating seniors of North Daviess High School who demonstrate qualities associated with good moral character and citizenship. This year’s $2,500 award recipient is James Graber.

Ronald Frette and Ann Frette 4-H Scholarship is an annual scholarship created by the Daviess County 4-H Club Association in honor of long-time supporters, Ronald and Ann Frette. Daviess County residents who are graduates of a Daviess County high school and pursuing post-secondary undergraduate studies or training may apply. Applicants must have participated in a Daviess County 4-H program for at least five years, completed at least two 4-H projects during each of those years, and maintained a minimum 2.5 cumulative grade point average during high school. Applicants must also demonstrate personal interest in and a positive attitude toward continuing their education and demonstrate good moral character. This year’s recipient is Jordan Remsburg, a student at Purdue University. Jordan was awarded $2,000.

GPC Washington Employees Scholarship is an annual scholarship created by the employees of Kent-Grain Processing Corporation in Washington to encourage the dependents of employees to further their education, to recognize the academic achievement of those graduating from high school and continuing their education, and to motivate recipients to achieve maximum scholastic and vocational potential. This year there are three recipients that each received $3,000; Leanna Sidebottom, Washington Catholic; Faith Dalton, Olivet Nazarene University; and Katherine Spaulding, University of Southern Indiana.

David K. Lynch Memorial Scholarship is an annual scholarship established by Cathleen M. (Lynch) Kendall in memory of her husband. Graduating seniors of any Daviess school who attended Lena Dunn Elementary School may apply. This year’s $700 award recipient is Stephanie Montoya Meza, Washington Catholic High School.

McKinley Vance Agri-Business Scholarship is an annual scholarship established by Lucile Vance in memory of her husband. Graduating seniors of Daviess County Schools with a scholastic rank in the upper third of their class may apply. Applicants must have participated in 4-H for at least four years and be pursuing a degree in the field of agriculture. This year the $1,200 scholarship was awarded to Adison Giesler, North Daviess High School.

North Daviess Scholarship is an annual scholarship fund established by the North Daviess Academic Opportunity Alliance (formerly known as North Daviess Dollars for Scholars Program) to help North Daviess students pursue advanced education. Applicants must be graduating seniors of North Daviess High School planning to pursue a degree at any accredited 2- or 4-year educational institution or trade school. This year there are four recipients that received $750 each: James Graber, Abigail Hellums, Marydith Borders, and Adison Giesler.

Lenore Overholser Memorial Scholarship is an annual scholarship established in memory of Lenore Overholser by her daughter, Kay Sander, and grandsons, Chad Sander and Craig Sander. Graduating seniors of North Daviess High School with a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average (4.0 scale) majoring in education at any accredited college or university may apply. This year’s $750 award recipient is Abigail Hellums.

German American Bancorp Scholarship is a scholarship established by Peoples National Bank of Washington. It is open to seniors from any Daviess County high school with a 3.0 cumulative grade point average planning to major in a business-related course of study. Selection is based on academics and leadership skills. The $2,000 award recipient is Beth Graber, Barr-Reeve High School.

Jo Ann Shawhan Memorial Scholarship is an annual scholarship established by John Shawhan in memory of his wife Jo Ann to benefit Daviess County students pursuing a nursing degree at Vincennes University. This year’s award recipient of $2,000 is Kenzyle Jeffers, North Daviess High School.

Dwight Risley Scholarship is a scholarship established by Martha Risley Reiners in memory of her husband. The fund typically awards multiple graduating seniors of any Daviess County high school for tuition, books, and required fees of post-secondary education. Applicants must demonstrate good scholastic standing and financial need. This year there are ten recipients: Chloe Garland, Washington Catholic High School $5,000; Beth Graber, Barr-Reeve High School $5,000; Xander Howard, Washington Catholic High School $5,000; Marydith Borders, North Daviess $3,500; Elle Stowers, Washington High School $3,500; Allyson Gross, Washington High School $2,500; Kaitlin Miller, Barr-Reeve High School $2,500; Isaac Mozingo, Washington High School $2,000; Madylin Borders, North Daviess High School $2,000; and Molly Brown, Washington Catholic High School $2,000.

Charles and Maxine Williams Scholarship is an annual scholarship established by the Estate of Maxine Williams in memory of Charles and Maxine to benefit North Daviess High School graduating seniors. Applicants must be planning to pursue a degree at an accredited 2- or 4-year educational institution or trade school. This year’s recipients are; James Graber, $1,200; Erika Myers, $1,200; Elaina Morgan, $900; Madylin Borders, $900; Marydith Borders, $900; and Abigail Hellums, $900.

Fraternal Order of Police Washington Lodge 101 Scholarship is an annual scholarship created by Lodge 101 of the Washington Indiana Fraternal Order of Police. The recipient must be planning to pursue a degree in Law enforcement or a related field. This year’s award is $1,000 and the recipient is Madylin Borders, North Daviess High School.

Lawrell Ray Hilgeman Memorial Scholarship is an annual created by Veale Creek Players in memory of Lawrell Ray Hilgeman. Applicants must have been involved in productions featured at the Veale Creek Theatre in Washington. This year’s $1,000 recipient is Xander Howard, Washington Catholic High School.

Sheldon Matthew Smith Memorial Scholarship is an annual scholarship created by Gregory A. and Natalie J. Smith in memory of their son, Sheldon (1193-2006). Graduating seniors from Washington High School or Washington Catholic High School planning a degree in writing, computer graphics, computer game design, computer art design, computer animation, computer programming, and/or web design. This year’s award is $1,000 and the recipient is Xander Howard, Washington Catholic High School.

Daviess County Community Foundation Scholarship

This year, 23 students applied for the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship, and as in years past, the Daviess County Community Foundation awards scholarships to those students who are alternates for the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship and finalists. The scholarships are made possible by donors to the Friends of Daviess County endowment fund. The total amount awarded this year is $15,000. The recipients are First Alternate, Braylee Knepp, Barr-Reeve High School $6,000; Second Alternate, Beth Graber, Barr-Reeve High School $3,000. The following Finalist will each receive $1,000; Isaac Mozingo, Washington High School; Chloe Browning, Washington High School; Kaitlin Miller, Barr-Reeve High School; Elle Stowers, Washington High School; Mya Cline, Washington Catholic High School; and Reagan Murray, Barr-Reeve High School.

Jayden Meredith of Washington High School is the 2023 Daviess County Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship recipient. He will receive a full-tuition scholarship to the Indiana College of her choice and a $900 yearly stipend for required books and equipment from the Lilly Endowment Scholarship Program. The Daviess County Community Foundation accepted applications and a volunteer selection committee made up of community leaders completed the review process for this award with final selections being made by Independent Colleges of Indiana.

Daviess County Community Foundation Announces The 2023 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program Recipient

The Daviess County Community Foundation is pleased to announce the recipient of the 2023 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship for Daviess County – Jayden Joseph Meredith of Washington High School. Lilly Endowment Community Scholars are known for their community involvement, academic achievement, character, and leadership.

“Not only is Jayden at the top of his class academically, but his dedication to his school and community was also apparent in his application and interview. The nominating committee was honored to have the opportunity to meet Jayden and recommend him for this life-changing scholarship opportunity,” said Laura Hazelman, Regional Director of Community Engagement and Impact for the Daviess County Community Foundation.

Jayden is the son of Matthew and Brenda Meredith. Following graduation, he plans to pursue a major in Pre-Medicine and eventually become an Anesthesiologist. Jayden plans to attend either Indiana University or the University of Notre Dame. In addition to excelling academically, he is active in a variety of school activities including Beta Club, Student Council, and Business Professionals of America. Jayden is also active in athletics, he has earned seven varsity letters and has been named Team Captain for Tennis, Baseball, and Basketball. He can also be found volunteering at youth sporting camps in the community.

Each Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship provides for full tuition, required fees and a special allocation of up to $900 per year for required books and required equipment for four years. The scholarship is for undergraduate students studying on a full-time basis leading to a baccalaureate degree at any eligible Indiana public or private nonprofit college or university. Lilly Endowment Community Scholars may also participate in the Lilly Scholars Network (LSN), which connects both current scholars and alumni with resources and opportunities to be active leaders on their campuses and in their communities. Both the scholarship program and LSN are supported by grants from Lilly Endowment to Independent Colleges of Indiana (ICI) and Indiana Humanities.

“The Community Foundation was thoroughly impressed with the quality of applicants and their level of involvement, Daviess County has many outstanding young adults full of talent and drive,” said Hazelman. Scholarship award alternates were also announced, Braylee Knepp of Barr-Reeve High School was named the first alternate and Beth Graber of Barr-Reeve High School was named the second alternate.

Lilly Endowment created the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program for the 1998-99 school year and has supported the program every year since with grants totaling in excess of $486 million. More than 5,000 Indiana students have received the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship since the program’s inception.

Daviess County Community Foundation Community Scholarship Program Now Accepting Applications

Donors to the Daviess County Community Foundation are making scholarship awards available again this year through the Community Scholarship Program.

“Many donors have honored their loved ones, high schools, or professions by endowing scholarship opportunities through the Foundation,” says Laura Hazelman, the Foundation’s Regional Director of Community Engagement and Impact. “We administer separate scholarship funds established by individuals, families, and organizations to assist local students in pursuit of advanced education. Together, these scholarships make up our Community Scholarship Program.”

Students may apply for one or more scholarships, as long as they meet the particular eligibility requirements. Details about each scholarship and the application are posted on the Foundation’s website at daviesscountycf.org .

The Foundation offers the following tips to help students complete their applications:

DCCF Awards $40,000 Community Good Grant To Daviess Community Hospital Foundation

The Daviess County Community Foundation recently awarded a $40,000 grant to the Daviess Community Hospital Foundation through its 2023 Community Good Grants program. This grant will be used to purchase an SUV for the Community Paramedic Program.

The Community Paramedic Program is a patient-centered model of care delivered in a patient’s home. This includes working with a team to coordinate in-home visits as well as the use of telehealth. The Community Paramedic will assist with health screenings, vaccinations, treatments, and follow-ups. The program will also include social work, substance abuse resources, mental health, chronic disease management, and more.

The Daviess Community Hospital Foundation is one of 20 nonprofit organizations that received grant awards through this year’s Community Good Grants program. Community Good Grants are made possible by generous donors of the Community Good/Unrestricted Funds and Field of Interest Funds with the Daviess County Community Foundation.

Daviess County Community Foundation Now Accepting Applications for the 2023 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program

The 2023 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship application is now available in Daviess County through the Daviess County Community Foundation. The Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program (LECSP) will provide 143 scholarships statewide and one scholarship in Daviess County. LECSP scholarships may be used for otherwise unreimbursed full tuition, required fees, and a special allocation of up to $900 per year. The special allocation may cover the costs for required books and required equipment for four years of undergraduate study on a full-time basis leading to a baccalaureate degree at any eligible Indiana public or private nonprofit college or university.

The program, administered statewide by Independent Colleges of Indiana (ICI) and locally in Daviess County through the Daviess County Community Foundation, is open to all Indiana residents who:

• graduate from an accredited Indiana high school by 2023 and receive their diploma no later than June 30, 2023;

• intend to pursue a full-time baccalaureate course of study at an eligible college or university in Indiana; and

• meet the criteria specific to their local community foundation.

Applications will be evaluated on, but not limited to, the following criteria: academic performance, community service and volunteer activities, and an essay. One recipient and two alternates will be nominated by the Daviess County Community Foundation, and their names will be submitted to ICI for final selection of the recipients. Scholarship recipients will be notified in December.

Lilly Endowment created LECSP for the 1997-1998 school year and has supported the program every year since with tuition grants totaling more than $424 million. Nearly 5,000 Indiana students have received Lilly Endowment Community Scholarships since the program’s inception.

Daviess County Community Foundation Awards $50,000 In Grants To Ten Local Nonprofits

The Daviess County Community Foundation is distributing $50,000 in grants to ten local nonprofit organizations through its 2022 Capital Projects Grants Program.

Grants awarded are:

· $5,500 to Barr-Reeve Community School Corporation to purchase a CPR manikin set, an educational AED trainer, hemorrhage control training kit, and choking training vest;

· $10,000 to Washington Police Department to assist with the purchase of a fully equipped Polaris Ranger off-road utility vehicle;

· $12,000 to Daviess County Family YMCA to assist with the installation of two single court volleyball systems and two front folding basketball units with backboards and breakaway rims;

· $3,000 to Memorial Hospital Foundation to purchase a medication refrigerator and a Urisys machine for the new pediatric provider at the Washington clinic;

· $4,725 to Daviess County Historical Society to purchase four Reader Rails to provide educational information about the exhibits;

· $2,000 to Daviess County Partnership, Inc. to assist with the purchase of a desktop business computer or laptop;

· $3,825 to Veale Creek Theatre for the repair of the ceiling in the foyer and the cost to insulate the attic;

· $5,000 to Odon Winkelpleck Public Library to assist with the purchase of needed equipment, software, licenses, professional installation services, and staff training for mobile printing capabilities;

· $2,700 to First Choice Solutions to assist with the purchase of a new copier for the staff and ministry; and

· $1,250 to Southwest Indiana Powerhouse to assist with the purchase of lawn mowers for the PowerUp Program to teach job skills to teenagers.

Daviess County Community Foundation Now Accepting Applications For Community Good Grants

The Daviess County Community Foundation is now accepting online applications for their Community Good Grants Program. The deadline to submit applications is Saturday, August 6, 2022.

The Foundation awards Community Good grants to charitable partners located in or directly serving Daviess County. Funding opportunities are available to support a broad range of local needs. Grants are normally given as one-time support of a project but may be considered for additional support or for expansions or outgrowths of an initial project.

Daviess County Community Foundation Awards Over $87,000 In Scholarships

The Daviess County Community Foundation announces the distribution of community scholarships totaling $87,450. This year, funds established by generous donors, provided the scholarships to 27 area students. The scholarship luncheon for fund founders and recipients was held Wednesday, May 11, 2022 at the Washington Community Building.

In addition to announcing the recipients, the Regional Director of Community Engagement & Impact, Laura Hazelman states, “The Daviess County Community Foundation is thankful to our generous fund founders and donors who make these scholarship awards possible. Their investment in the education of our young people has impacted each of these students. The process of choosing who will be awarded each of these scholarships is undertaken with dedication and discipline by a committee of Daviess County community volunteer leaders. We are grateful for their hard work and dedication in doing this. The process is never easy because our Daviess County students are exceptional.”

The scholarships awarded:

Derek Ray Arvin Memorial Scholarship is an annual scholarship established by the family of Derek Ray Arvin, class of 2014, to benefit a Washington High School graduating senior. Along with several other factors, selection is based on financial need, the applicant’s level of athletic involvement and their participation in a faith community. This year’s award is $2,500 and the recipient is Thursday Htoo.

Ronald Todd Beasley Memorial Scholarship is an annual scholarship established in memory of Ronald Todd Beasley by his parents, Ronald Lee and Diane Beasley; his brother, Dr. Harley Scott Beasley; and friends. Applicants must be graduating seniors of North Daviess High School who demonstrate qualities associated with a good moral character and citizenship. This year’s $2,500 award recipient is Luke Dedina.

Ronald Frette and Ann Frette 4-H Scholarship is an annual scholarship created by the Daviess County 4-H Club Association in honor of long-time supporters, Ronald and Ann Frette. Daviess County residents who are graduates of a Daviess County high school and pursuing post-secondary undergraduate studies or training may apply. Applicants must have participated in a Daviess County 4-H program for at least five years, completed at least two 4-H projects during each of those years, and maintained a minimum 2.5 cumulative grade point average during high school. Applicants must also demonstrate personal interest in and positive attitude toward continuing their education and demonstrate good moral character. This year’s recipients are Hayden Fuhs, a student at Indiana Wesleyan University and Kaelyn Klopfenstein, a student at Taylor University. They will each receive an award of $2,250.

GPC Washington Employees Scholarship is an annual scholarship created by the employees of Kent-Grain Processing Corporation in Washington to encourage the dependents of employees to further their education, to recognize academic achievement of those graduating from high school and continuing their education, and to motivate recipients to achieve maximum scholastic and vocational potential. This year there are two recipients; Kaelyn Klopfenstein, student at Taylor University, $6,000 and Ellie Reed, Washington High School, $3,000.

David K. Lynch Memorial Scholarship is an annual scholarship established by Cathleen M. (Lynch) Kendall in memory of her husband. Graduating seniors of any Daviess school who attended Lena Dunn Elementary School may apply. This year’s $500 award recipient is Iris Vicente, Washington Catholic High School.

McKinley Vance Agri-Business Scholarship is an annual scholarship established by Lucile Vance in memory of her husband. Graduating seniors of Daviess County Schools with a scholastic rank in the upper third of their class may apply. Applicants must have participated in 4-H for at least four years and be pursuing a degree in the field of agriculture. This year the $1,200 scholarship is awarded to Jordan Remsburg, North Daviess High School.

North Daviess Scholarship is an annual scholarship fund established by the North Daviess Academic Opportunity Alliance (formerly known as North Daviess Dollars for Scholars Program) to help North Daviess students pursue advanced education. Applicants must be graduating seniors of North Daviess High School planning to pursue a degree at any accredited 2- or 4-year educational institution or trade school. This year there are four recipients receiving $750 each: Kaitlyn Carroll, Hannah Bennington, Dylan Wagler and Brooks Helms.

German American Bancorp Scholarship is a scholarship established by Peoples National Bank of Washington. It is open to seniors from any Daviess County high school with a 3.0 cumulative grade point average planning to major in a business related course of study. Selection is based on academics and leadership skills. The $2,000 award recipient is Kenli Barber, Washington High School.

Jo Ann Shawhan Memorial Scholarship is an annual scholarship established by John Shawhan in memory of his wife Jo Ann to benefit Daviess County students pursuing a nursing degree at Vincennes University. This year’s scholarship recipients are Kaitlyn Carroll, North Daviess High School $2,000; Grace Lingenfelter, Loogootee High School $1,000; and Alexis Bauer, Barr-Reeve High School $1,000.

Dwight Risley Scholarship is a scholarship established by Martha Risley Reiners in memory of her husband. The fund typically awards multiple graduating seniors of any Daviess County high school for tuition, books, and required fees of post-secondary education. Applicants must demonstrate good scholastic standing and financial need. This year there are ten recipients: Sabree Myers, Washington High School $5,000; Jennifer Swartzentruber, Barr-Reeve High School $5,000; Iris Vicente, Washington Catholic High School $5,000; Kenli Barber, Washington High School $3,500; Makana Gabrel, Barr- Reeve High School $3,500; Kaitlyn Carroll, North Daviess High School $2,500; Jordan Remsburg, North Daviess High School $2,500; Hailey Raber, Barr-Reeve High School $2,000; Calypso McAlister, Washington High School $2,000; and Hannah Bennington, North Daviess High School $2,000.

Charles and Maxine Williams Scholarship is an annual scholarship established by the Estate of Maxine Williams in memory of Charles and Maxine to benefit North Daviess High School graduating seniors. Applicants must be planning to pursue a degree at an accredited 2- or 4-year educational institution or trade school. This year three North Daviess students are receiving $2,000 each. The recipients are Michaela Chambers, Shayleigh Graber and Dylan Wagler.

Daviess County Community Foundation Scholarship - This year, 18 students applied for the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship and as in years past, the Daviess County Community Foundation awards scholarships to those students who are alternates for the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship and finalists. The scholarships are made possible by donors to the Friends of Daviess endowment fund. The total amount being awarded this year is $15,000. The recipients are First Alternate, Trista Swartzentruber, Barr-Reeve $3,000; Second Alternate, Seth Allison, Washington High School $3,000; Jennifer Swartzentruber, Barr-Reeve High School $3,000; Kenli Barber, Washington High School $1,200; Simon Parsons, Washington High School $1,200; Ian Dayton, Washington High School $1,200; Kaitlyn Carroll, North Daviess $1,200; and Logan Craney, Washington Catholic High School $1,200.

Alaina Thorne of Washington High School, is the 2022 Daviess County Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship recipient. She will receive a full-tuition scholarship to the Indiana College of her choice and a $900 yearly stipend for required books and equipment from the Lilly Endowment Scholarship Program. The Daviess County Community Foundation accepted applications and a volunteer selection committee made up of community leaders completed the review process for this award with final selections being made by Independent Colleges of Indiana.

Daviess County Community Foundation Announces 2022 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Recipient

The Daviess County Community Foundation is pleased to announce that Alaina Thorne is the 2022 recipient of the Daviess County Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship. Lilly Endowment Community Scholars are known for their community involvement, academic achievement, character, and leadership.

“It was a pleasure to work closely with our dedicated members of the scholarship nomination committee to determine finalists and nominate this year’s Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship recipient, Alaina Thorne. Alaina is an impressive student and I look forward to seeing her excel during the next four years of college, and many years to come. Although we could only nominate one student for the award, all finalists should be very proud of their accomplishments. This is a stellar group of students!” said Melinda Waldroup, Director of Programs and Strategic Engagement, Community Foundation Alliance.

Alaina Thorne is the daughter of Dr. Marcus Thorne and Dr. Jacqueline Graber, of Washington, IN. She is a senior at Washington High School and plans to attend Notre Dame University studying Pre-Medicine – Biomedical Engineering. In addition to exceling academically, Thorne has been involved in a variety of school activities including Deca, Student Council, and Business Professionals of America. She is active in athletics – basketball, volleyball and tennis. Thorne received a varsity letter every year she has played, and has been named all-conference in all three sports. She was named team captain for both basketball and volleyball her junior and senior years. Outside of school, Thorne has participated in New Hope Christian Church Journey through Bethlehem, Feed My Sheep canned food drive, and a Christmas program helping families.

In nominating Daviess County’s Lilly Endowment Community Scholar, consideration was given to academic performance, community service and volunteer activities, personal statement of goals and essay, school activities, sports and work experience, finalist impromptu essay, and finalist interview. After the field of applicants was narrowed down by the Daviess County Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program (LECSP) Nominating Committee, the nominee and alternates were submitted to the statewide administrator of the LECSP, Independent Colleges of Indiana, for the selection of the scholarship recipient.

Scholarship award alternates were also announced. Trista Swartzentruber from Barr-Reeve High School was named first alternate and Seth Allison from Washington High School was named second alternate. Each will receive a $3,000 scholarship from the Friends of Daviess County Fund. In addition, all remaining finalists will also receive a scholarship from the Friends of Daviess County Fund.

The LECSP is administered locally by the Community Foundation, with the support of local high schools, and the administrative oversight by the Independent Colleges of Indiana, Inc. Lilly Endowment created the LECSP for the 1998-1999 school year and has supported the program every year since with tuition grants totaling in excess of $439 million. More than 5,000 Indiana students have received the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship since the program’s inception.

The primary purposes of the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program are: 1) to help raise the level of educational attainment in Indiana; 2) to increase awareness of the beneficial roles Indiana community foundations can play in their communities; and 3) to encourage and support the efforts of current and past Lilly Endowment Community Scholars to engage with each other and with Indiana business, governmental, educational, nonprofit, and civic leaders to improve the quality of life in Indiana generally and in local communities throughout the state.

The Daviess County Community Foundation is distributing $302,221 in grants to 28 local organizations through its 2021 Community Good Grants Program.

Grants awarded are:

$4,200 to Bread of Life Ministry, Inc. to pay freight costs for donated food to distribute to low income families in Daviess County.

$2,870 to Chemo Buddies to provide first day chemo comfort kits bags (chapstick, hand sanitizer, port pillow, neck rest, handmade warm blanket, tissues, game books, candy, chocolate, journal, pen, etc.), wigs, hats, and accessories, and periodic transportation.

$1,650 to Children’s Center for Dance Education to cover venue rental, truck, and gas to bring “Les Sylphides” and “The Orange Barrel Ballet” performances to Daviess County.

$29,538.48 to Daviess Community Hospital Foundation to purchase two LUCAS 3, v3.1 Chest Compression Systems, and necessary accessories for Daviess Community Hospital EMS.

$3,499 to Daviess County Family YMCA for the Wellness Center safety improvement project to replace racks and dumbbells.

$23,422.16 to Daviess County Historical Society to purchase five wall unit display cases, four folding exhibit partitions, and eight tables with 104 chairs.

$9,000 to Daviess County Partnership, Inc. for the purchase of washers, dryers, laundry soap and fabric softener, program materials, and staff salary to develop the Loads of Love laundry assistance program in conjunction with the Stepping Forward Program for people needing assistance with laundry.

$3,590 to Daviess County Pickleball for the purchase of pickleball equipment (balls, tube ball collectors, ball hoppers, weather vane, paddles, clip boards, cones, and targets), totes and shelves, first aid kits, and an AED.

$20,000 to Daviess Martin Joint County Parks & Recreation Department for the purchase and installation of an irrigation pump for Lakeview Golf Course to continue to serve the needs of residents and high school golf teams.

$14,000 to Four Rivers Resource Services, Inc. for equipment and other costs associated with producing a video to increase the understanding and rewards of working with individuals with special needs in order to strengthen and expand the caregiver workforce.

$2,000 to Friends for Animals, Inc. for the spay/neuter project in Daviess County.

$2,500 to Generations, Division of Vincennes University’s Statewide Service to support the Aging Well Retreat that will provide informational programming and lunch to older adults ages 55+.

$15,000 to Illiana Christian Assembly, Inc. to develop a website, app, and marketing for the Love Washington IN project that will mobilize community members to help their neighbors with physical home repairs, transportation assistance, and other miscellaneous daily needs.

$11,052 to Junior Achievement (JA) of Southwestern Indiana to facilitate 28 JA programs in Daviess County, serving 614 students in all three school corporations, focusing on work readiness, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy.

$28,947 to Lighthouse Recovery Center to support the construction of a new classroom building.

$5,000 to Pace Community Action Agency to host a Community Service Fair that will provide the community and local agencies a venue to learn about community resources available in the Daviess County area and surrounding communities, while receiving no-cost services.

$14,000 to Parkview Village Christian Care, Inc. for the construction of a covered, open-air pavilion for use by residents and members of the community.

$7,190 to Senior and Family Services, Inc. for the purchase and installation of two automatic door openers for the Washington Senior Center.

$25,000 to Youth First to support the Youth First School-Based Social Work Program that provides free access to expert mental health support to students in nine K-12 Daviess County schools.

Funding for the program is provided by generous donors who have established and donated to 27 Community Good (Unrestricted) Funds and Field of Interest Funds held by the Community Foundation Alliance, Inc.
